One of the best ways to know a city, its culture and its people is through its food. In this experience you will discover the magic of Buenos Aires through its most traditional bites.
Let´s meet at the San Telmo Market to start our food experience. You will be able to admire the amazing architecture of the building and the fresh local products offered there. And you will have breakfast like locals do: a coffee with milk (Argentinian latte) and a medialuna (kind of Argentinian croissant).
Ready to start walking around San Telmo? One of the oldest districts in the city. You will discover the National School of Buenos Aires, where many personalities from the arts and politics studied. Or the old Church of San Ignacio, from the Colony times.
Following your local host, you will arrive to the Plaza de Mayo: the real heart of the city. In this epic square, the most important past and present events of country take place. It is surrounded by beautiful and important architecture, including the Casa Rosada, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Cabildo.
It´s time to take a rest and taste another local bite. What could be better than a “Mate”? Trademark of the local culture, the mate is an infusion made of Yerba Mate, which offers a variety of bitter flavors and is rich in caffeine. The perfect pair for the mate is an alfajor: very sweet pastry stuffed with dulce de leche (a kind of milky caramel) .
Avenida de Mayo will lead your steps towards the most iconic symbol of the city: the Obelisco. Your local host will tell you the story about what happened twice in that very spot 5 centuries ago.
Avenida 9 de Julio will be in front of you. It is the “widest avenue in the world” as locals are proud to say. Once you cross it, during at least three greens in the traffic lights, you will start the last part of this experience.
Walk along Corrientes Avenue: the avenue that “never sleeps”. It is the area of theatres, cinemas and famous pizzerias (pizza houses). Your host will take you to one of the locals’ favorite pizzeria. Try a slice of a delicious pizza and faina (a crunchy, thin bread made of chickpea flour) Or maybe you will prefer a beef empanada (Argentinian pastry filled with savory ingredients, mainly beef). Artisan craft beer or a glass of Malbec wine? What a difficult decision!!! Did you know that one famous European writer found his inspiration in an old books store in this avenue tasting the same bites as you will? Ask your host about the story.
Local Argentinian bites cannot be complete without the sweet touch of ice creams. Locals are very fond of them, no matter if the weather is hot or cold. Close your eyes and think about the strangest flavor you can imagine for an ice cream…. You will find it there! Argentinian ice creams are almost masterpieces: you will not believe that so much ice cream can be placed in a cone. But take your host advice: have a seat and enjoy it. You will need years of training for having an ice cream while walking, like locals do.
